Physical Education Curriculum
Intent:
At Orchard Lea we aim to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good quality physical education lessons, a range of sporting opportunities and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We listen to our children wants and needs and provide them with a range of active experiences and clubs. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect their own and others successes. We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond.
We strive to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make active and healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our children's well-being. We have strong links with local the partnership within our community which ensures all our children have an opportunity to participate in competitive sporting events either within school or within our local community.
Implementation:
We have recently adopted the Get Set 4 P.E. scheme to teach P.E. across the federation. The scheme ensures that we fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum, as well as providing all of our children with a wealth of exciting, broad and relevant opportunities to develop their physical movement skills.
In the Infant school, the children begin their journey in P.E. and our aim is to do this in a safe, fun environment where every child feels secure and confident to achieve. The curriculum map starts by taking the children through introductory units to learn the fundamental skills needed in P.E. sessions. Moving towards gymnastics, games and balls skills towards the end of Year R. In Key Stage One children develop more skills across the two years including gymnastics, athletics, invasion games, striking and fielding and target games. This will develop their coordination, agility and balance and also their ability to be able to work cooperatively with others in sometimes competitive scenarios.
The children will have P.E. sessions twice a week in the infant school and each half term will cover either two different units from Get Set 4 P.E. or (on a rotation basis) by a specialist yoga teacher.
In the Junior school, the curriculum map has been designed to ensure there is a wide variety of physical activities and sports for the children to engage with as well as the opportunity to develop and refine skills progressively. Some sports are taught yearly such as dance and gymnastics. Invasion games, striking and fielding games and target games are also taught each year but through different games which are taught once in lower KS2 and again in upper KS2. For example cricket is taught in year 3 and year 5 and rounders is taught in year 4 and year 6. This means striking and fielding skills are being developed progressively each year but through two different games to allow for variety and for the children to transfer learnt skills.
Each class in the junior school completes two Get Set 4 P.E. units per half term through two different weekly P.E. lessons. One lesson is delivered by the class teacher, with another lesson being delivered by our in school sports coach whose sessions focus on developing skills in team games in order to support and increase the number of children taking part in competitive games.
In addition to the physical key skill or skills to be taught in a lesson, each lesson also has opportunities outlined to develop social, emotional and thinking skills which develop the whole child.
Across the federation, we use lunchtimes and visits to our daily mile track to help promote an active and healthy lifestyle. As well as a variety of after school sporting clubs which are available to all of our children.
